How to build a capsule
wardrobe that works

Twelve pieces, forty outfits, zero mornings spent staring into the closet. The no-nonsense method Alex uses with every wardrobe consult, laid out so you can run it yourself.

Every wardrobe consult starts the same way: a client with a full closet and nothing to wear. The fix is almost never more clothes. It is fewer, better, more compatible ones. Here is the actual method.

Step one: the honest empty

Everything comes out. Every hanger, every drawer, every gym bag with a forgotten tee in it. You cannot edit what you cannot see, and most people are genuinely surprised by the pile on the bed.

Step two: the four piles

Sort into keep, fix, donate, and go. The rules that make it work:

  • If you have not worn it in twelve months, it goes to donate or go.
  • If it needs a fix worth under $60, it goes to the fix pile, not the bin.
  • If it fits a life you do not live anymore, let it go. The aspirational gym gear counts.
  • Sentimental gets a box, not a hanger. Three items max.

Step three: find the gaps

Now look at what is left and ask what it cannot do. Usually the gaps are boring and specific: a jacket that goes over everything, one pair of pants that is not jeans, shoes that work Monday and Saturday. Write them down. That list is your entire shopping plan.

A capsule wardrobe is not about owning less. It is about owning nothing that does not work with at least three other things you own.

Step four: the twelve-piece core

The Brisbane edition that covers ninety percent of life here: two heavyweight tees, one white one dark; an oxford shirt; a linen shirt for summer; one pair of good jeans; one pair of chinos; shorts that are not cargo; a chore jacket or overshirt; a hoodie you can wear in public; one pair of clean sneakers; one pair of boots; a belt that matches both.

Everything else you add should fight its way in by working with at least three pieces on that list.

Where most people blow it

Buying the gaps all at once, in a panic, at full retail. The fix pile comes first: a $45 alteration on a piece you already own beats a new purchase most of the time. Then the gaps, slowly, op shops first.

If you want this done for you in ninety minutes instead of a weekend, that is literally what the wardrobe consult is.

Capsule questions

It is a core, not a ceiling. Twelve pieces that all work together, plus whatever extras earn their spot. Most people land around twenty-five and stop buying randomly.

The method is identical, the list just changes. Swap the oxford for a good blouse, the chinos for whatever pant shape you actually wear, and the logic holds.

If your job has a strict dress code, treat work as its own mini capsule. Same rules, separate rail.
